Search "WireGuard free" and you'll find two very different things mixed together. Some sites hand out free WireGuard config files for the official WireGuard app. Others are VPN apps that use WireGuard and have a free plan. And a few people will tell you to run your own server.
All three can work. They just ask very different things of you: who you trust with your traffic, how much setup you'll put up with, and how often you'll have to redo it. Here's how they compare.
Short answer: WireGuard itself is free, open-source software, but you still need a server at the other end. For most Android users, a free VPN app that runs on WireGuard is the easiest and safest option, with no config files or expiring keys. Free config sites work, but the site creates your private key and runs the server, so you're trusting an operator you usually know nothing about.

Is WireGuard Free?
Yes. The protocol, and the official apps for Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac and Linux, are free and open source. You can get them from wireguard.com or Google Play.
The catch is that the official app is only a client. On its own it doesn't connect you to anything. It needs a WireGuard server on the other end, plus a config containing that server's address and keys. Someone has to run that server and pay for it, and that's where the three options come from.
Option 1: Free WireGuard Config Files
Sites such as VPNBook, VPN Jantit and various "free WireGuard server" pages let you pick a country and download a .conf file or scan a QR code into the official WireGuard app.
What's good: you use the official open-source client, you don't install another VPN app, and it's genuinely free.
What to know before you do it:
- The site generated your private key. In WireGuard, the private key is what proves who you are. When a website creates the config for you, it has that key too. That's fine for casual browsing, but it's not "your" key in any meaningful sense.
- You're trusting an operator you can't check. All your traffic exits through their server. Many of these sites are run anonymously, with thin privacy policies, and fund themselves with ads and donations.
- Configs often expire. Many free servers rotate keys or remove accounts after a few days, so you end up regenerating and re-importing.
- No extras. You get a tunnel and nothing else. Use Android's own Always-on VPN and "Block connections without VPN" settings as your kill switch.
Option 2: Free VPN Apps That Use WireGuard
Here the app does the WireGuard part for you. It creates the keys, picks the server and connects, so there's nothing to download or scan. A few free options:
- CarrotVPN (ours): WireGuard on every server, no account, no data cap. You choose between the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore and Bangladesh. It's ad-supported, and some locations unlock after a short rewarded ad.
- Proton VPN Free: no data cap and no ads, but you need an account and the app picks the country for you.
- Windscribe Free: 10 countries to choose from, 10 GB a month with a confirmed email.
The trade-off is the reverse of the config route. You trust a named company and its privacy policy instead of an anonymous server, and in return you get a kill switch, automatic reconnection and servers that don't expire. We compare free plans in detail in Best Free VPN for Android 2026.
Option 3: Run Your Own WireGuard Server
If you have a computer at home that's always on, or a cheap cloud server, you can install WireGuard on it and connect your phone to it. The software is free, and you're the only one who sees your traffic.
Two things people miss. A home server only gives you your home IP address, which is great for reaching your own network or for safety on public WiFi, but it won't change your country. And a cloud server isn't free: you pay for it, keep it updated, and secure it yourself. It's a fun project if you enjoy that kind of thing, but it's not a shortcut to a free VPN.

How to Judge a Free WireGuard Source
- Can you find out who runs it? A company name and address beat an anonymous page.
- Read the privacy policy for the words "logs", "partners" and "advertising".
- Only use the official WireGuard app from Google Play or wireguard.com for config files. Never use an APK the config site asks you to install.
- Don't log into banking or work accounts through a server you know nothing about.
- Check for leaks once connected with our VPN leak test guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is WireGuard free?
Yes. WireGuard and its official apps are free and open source. You still need a WireGuard server to connect to, which is either provided by a VPN service, a free config site, or a server you run yourself.
Are free WireGuard config files safe?
They work, but the site that generates the config also creates your private key and runs the server your traffic exits through. Use them only from operators you can identify, and avoid sensitive logins over them.
Can I use the WireGuard app without a server?
No. The official app is only a client. It needs a config with a server address and keys before it can connect anywhere.
Which free VPN uses WireGuard on Android?
CarrotVPN uses WireGuard on every server with no account and no data cap. Proton VPN Free and Windscribe Free also offer WireGuard, with an account required.
