Lag in Mobile Legends comes in three flavours, and they need different fixes. Network lag is when the ping number turns yellow or red and skills land late. Phone lag is when the ping is green but the screen stutters and the phone feels hot. Server lag is when everyone in the match is teleporting at once.
Most guides throw twenty tips at you without telling them apart. We'll start by working out which kind you have, and then fix that.
Short answer: turn on Speed Mode (and Network Boost if you have WiFi and mobile data) under Settings → Network. Play on 5GHz WiFi or strong 4G, stop background downloads, and stop your phone from switching between WiFi and mobile data mid-match. If the ping is green but the game stutters, lower your graphics settings, because the problem is the phone. Try a VPN only if your provider routes you badly, and keep it only if your ping actually drops.

Why MLBB Lags Even With Good Internet
"I have 100 Mbps and it still lags" is the most common complaint, and the explanation is simple: speed and ping are different things. Download speed is how much data you can move. Ping is how long a tiny packet takes to reach the game server and come back. MLBB sends small packets constantly, so it cares about ping and stability, not megabits.
A fast connection can still have high ping (a long route to the server), jitter (ping that swings up and down) or packet loss (packets that never arrive). Any of those makes the game feel worse than a slower but steadier line.
Network Fixes (1–7)
1. Turn on Speed Mode
In MLBB, tap the gear icon, then Network, and switch on Speed Mode. It's built to help on mobile data and uses a bit more data. It doesn't help everyone, so play a Classic match with it on and keep it only if the game feels better.
2. Turn on Network Boost (if you have both WiFi and data)
Network Boost in the same menu lets the game use WiFi and mobile data together, so when one stutters the other picks up. It uses mobile data even while you're on WiFi, so keep an eye on your data pack.
3. Stop your phone switching networks mid-match
Many Android phones jump to mobile data when WiFi gets weak. For a moment the connection drops, and that shows up as a sudden red ping spike. Turn off the setting that does this while you play. Depending on the brand it's called Switch to mobile data, Intelligent Wi-Fi or Adaptive Wi-Fi.
4. Use 5GHz WiFi, or sit closer to the router
2.4GHz WiFi is crowded and easily disturbed by walls and other devices, which causes packet loss. If your router offers a 5GHz network (often with "5G" in the name), use it, and stay in the same room.
5. Kill background downloads
Play Store updates, photo backup and someone streaming on the same WiFi all compete with the game. Pause them before ranked.
6. Lock mobile data to 4G/5G
If your phone keeps dropping to 3G, set the preferred network type to 4G/5G in your SIM settings so it can't fall back mid-game.
7. Restart the router or toggle Airplane mode
It clears a stuck connection more often than you'd think. On mobile data, turn Airplane mode on for ten seconds, then off.
Phone Fixes (8–10)
8. Lower the graphics
In Settings → Graphics, turn off HD mode and shadows and use a lower quality preset. A smooth 60 FPS on Medium beats a stuttering Ultra setting every time.
9. Let the phone cool down
Phones slow themselves down when hot. Take off a thick case, don't play while charging if the phone runs warm, and give it a break between matches.
10. Clear the cache (not the data)
Go to Settings → Apps → Mobile Legends → Storage and tap Clear cache. Only clear data if your account is bound to Moonton, Google or Facebook, otherwise a guest account can be lost.
Server Problems (11)
11. Check whether it's everyone
If the whole lobby is teleporting or the game won't log in, check our MLBB server status guide and MLBB's official pages before changing anything on your side.
When a VPN Helps (12)
12. Try a VPN only if your route is bad
A VPN can't make the distance to the server shorter. What it can do is take a different path when your provider's route to the game is congested or throttled, which tends to happen in the evening. Connect to the server closest to the MLBB server (Singapore for most of South and Southeast Asia), compare the in-game ping, and keep it only if the number drops. Our MLBB VPN guide has server picks by country, and this page covers whether it's allowed.
Why Ping Gets Stuck at 285ms
Lots of players see their ping freeze at around 285ms. That number usually isn't a real measurement. It shows up when packets stop getting through at all, often for a few seconds while the phone switches between WiFi and data or the WiFi signal drops. If you see it often, look at fixes 3 and 4 first.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good ping for MLBB?
Under 50ms feels excellent and under 100ms is fine for ranked. Above roughly 120ms you will notice skills and blinks landing late.
Why does Mobile Legends lag even with good internet?
Because speed and ping are different. MLBB needs a short, stable route to the server. A fast connection can still have high ping, jitter or packet loss, which all cause lag.
Does Speed Mode in MLBB use more data?
Yes, a little. Network Boost uses mobile data even while you are on WiFi. Test both in a Classic match and keep whichever makes the game smoother.
How do I fix MLBB ping spikes?
Stop your phone switching between WiFi and mobile data, use 5GHz WiFi or strong 4G, and pause background downloads. Spikes are usually short drops in the connection, not a slow server.
Can a VPN lower MLBB ping?
Only when your provider routes you badly. Connect to the server nearest the game server, compare the in-game ping, and keep the VPN only if it is lower.
